Keys, Curtains, Rugs

On Wednesday, Lord Malarkey announced he had lost his keys. Not his car keys, on account of the fact he’d returned home from work on Tuesday evening and wouldn’t have managed to that without them, but his house and work keys which are on a big bunch altogether.

We did a bit of retracing steps around the garden, the driveway and house, and Lord M searched his car which is an adventure in itself, but with no joy. And then we did that mad and futile thing that you do when looking for lost things, which is checking bizarre and random places like drawers, the fridge, cupboards etc etc because the act of merely looking for something makes you feel productive in the face of The Annoyance of All Things Lost.

Eventually, Lord M took himself off to work to have a search there (it was his day off) and as he went I sent up a request for help to St Anthony, the patron saint of lost things. I made the promise that if the keys were found, I’d make a donation to charity, because that is the bargain with St Anthony.

The keys WERE found - hurrah! - between a big pile of blue paper towel rolls and a set of lockers, and I purchased four bales of hay for the Buttercup Goat Sanctuary Annual Hay Appeal to keep my promise to St A.

Wednesday also saw the arrival of the new sofa. It is VERY comfortable and I am glad we bought it, despite its brown leather nature. However, a new big piece of furniture throws out the aesthetic of a room and because I knew this would happen, I had already ordered a new set of curtains. The old set - green with a leaf pattern - had been in situ for the best part of the ten years we’ve been here and with the old sofas (one blue, one purple) they looked just fine. BUT, take out the blue sofa and replace it with a brown one, and you have aesthetic issues of First World Problem magnitude. Therefore, I bought new curtains in a deep, damask rose chenille. I installed them yesterday and only cricked my neck a little whilst wrangling with the curtain pole.

Whilst I was on the Dunelm site ordering the curtains, I got distracted by a rug runner in the sale. It was 100% wool. It was my kind of pattern. It was HALF PRICE. And yes, dear Reader(s), I did buy it. It is now running in the space leading from the dining room to the living room, which means we now can’t close the door between the two rooms, but hey! It’s a really lovely bargain rug!

However, I am now looking at the blue rug in the centre of the room which was fine all the while we had blue and purple sofas but now we are purple and BROWN, well, I’m thinking do we need to change THAT rug? When I say ‘we’ I mean ‘me’ because Lord M doesn’t care a jot about home furnishings and besides, he is too busy eating bananas because the recent blood test he had (also on Wednesday - it was all happening on Wednesday) has shown he is low in potassium.

I think I’ll keep an eye open for a deep damask rose coloured rug. Not today, though. I have a banana loaf cake to make because I volunteered to assist with the village coffee morning, which is tomorrow. I’d better crack on with the baking before Lord M snaffles all the bananas.

  1. Hurrah for finding the keys! It’s funny how making one change can affect the entire room. Sounds like you ate getting a handle on it
